The Northwoods - Upper Midwest

After a devastating wildfire cancelled our trip to Canada’s Jasper National Park, we scrambled to make new plans for that autumn season and ended up in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan for about six weeks. Coming from Colorado, a place with expansive public lands, I struggled at first to wrap my mind around the complex patchwork of private and public land in the places we randomly selected to visit when studying state forest maps at home in advance of the trip. Once we found a few quiet pockets of public and privately protected lands, the photography flowed without much effort. Although autumn arrived about three weeks late and we missed some of the “best” colors in many places we visited, I still found The Northwoods landscape to be creatively stimulating and deeply beautiful.
