Exploring Death Valley’s canyons has become an obsession, mostly because every single one we have visited has a character all its own. The solitude that comes with hiking cross-country without a trail to follow is appealing, as is the sense of discovery when exploring a mostly empty section on a map. I have hiked to 83 of the park’s canyons, and with each new entry on my list, the feeling that I have so much more to learn about this landscape dominates my memories.
