Those who are not experienced exploring deserts may have the misconception that they are all sand dunes. They would be wrong. But they wouldn't be completely wrong for Death Valley which has many dune fields (the four major ones being Mesquite, Eureka, Panamint, and Ibex - but there are more, and they're all worth visiting).
The first time I visited Ibex Dunes in 2012 I had the entire dune field to myself. It was so windy that my ballhead decided to fall on my actual head (the ballhead met its match in my thick skull and has yet to muster up the courage for a rematch). I was also fortunate to see a thunderstorm culminating in a double rainbow. Many of the most intense wind storms in Death Valley I have spent on dunes, getting involuntarily exfoliated by blasting sand and marveling at visual (and auditory) spectacle of blowing sand and light. There really is nothing else on Earth like it.
